Gerry Kelly, a father of two and proud grandfather of four, was only 63 when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer following a regular blood test that showed elevated PSA levels.
Gerry had no notable symptoms prior to diagnosis but thanks to swift action after raised PSA levels were found in two successive tests; he received his diagnosis and treatment while his cancer was still in its early stages.
Gerry shares his story and experiences to help raise awareness of prostate cancer, start more open conversations about prostate health and eliminate some of the stigma associated with diagnosis and treatments.
This is Gerry’s story:
Following a regular blood test, raised PSA levels were found in two successive tests. From there I underwent, DRE, flow test, cystoscopy, MRI and trans perineal biopsies, a thorough check!
This series of investigations revealed the presence of cancer in my prostate.
When my GP said in a solemn tone “you are going on quite a journey ”, I seized on her comment and asked if she could prescribe something to help me with any anxiety along my way as I knew this might be an issue for me.
She did just that and I’m certain that the medication coupled with a positive attitude helped greatly throughout my own journey.
It was then decision time as to which course of treatment to follow. I was intent on having brachytherapy until a family meeting decided … final answer, radical bilateral robotic prostatectomy. The procedure took place in Feb 2022. Having a partner who was very well versed in medical issues and hugely supportive was a major plus for my morale and mental health.
As part of my mental therapy, I wrote an account of my journey on the anniversary of my operation and published it in October 2023. ‘Prostate, Piddling and Passion’ is my own honest account of that somewhat taboo subject of prostate cancer. I left nothing off limits as I really wanted to normalise speaking out about prostate cancer. This book I hope helps do just that.
If I waited for symptoms, I could be dead now. I say that because 25% of my prostate had cancer and my diagnosis came about as a result of blood tests carried out by my doctor.
So if you are a healthy young man, get yourself checked anyway. If there’s nothing there, good for you.
If you find something amiss early stages, it can be fixed so that you will live, laugh and love for years to come. If you have a brother, a father, a partner, or friend who is shy of doctors, nag him or drag him to his local GP. Get tested, live longer.
