To Marie, Yvonne, Fiona & my fellow Thrivers,

My first instinct when I was diagnosed with cancer was fear but I also felt a sense of determination. Knowing I had fought cancer 13 years previously gave me the strength to know I could do it again. I am a fighter and very stubborn which got me through surgery and Radiotherapy but trying to navigate life again after cancer has proven more difficult and has left me feeling very isolated and stuck.

My husband and family have been so supportive and have held my hand over the last 18 months but now I think it’s time I return the favour by working hard to make myself a better person to be around and try to have a more positive outlook on life.

Trusting your gut was one of the things we talked about over the last 6 weeks and trusting my gut was the reason I signed up for the Survive and Thrive programme. I am so thankful that no one very close to me has had to endure the pain of a cancer diagnosis but not having anyone who can relate to me has left me feeling very alone. I finally listened to my gut when it told me to reach out to someone and when I heard about the Marie Keating programme on a podcast it really struck a chord with me. I signed up straight away and was lucky enough to get a place after someone else cancelled last minute.

Dialling into the 1st zoom call was very daunting but our calls every Tuesday night have been such a safe space to talk openly about our feelings. Although no one’s experience is the same we have all been able to support each other and knowing someone else understands has been a huge support to me.

During the course we discussed the “new normal”, coping mechanisms when waiting for results and making action plans, all of which are so relevant and important skills when navigating life after cancer.

I am so thankful to Marie, Yvonne and Fiona for facilitating this course and will be forever grateful for all the advice and reassurance they have given us.

We have all been unfortunate to have been affected by cancer but one thing it has done is brought us together, which in my case has made me a more positive person.

Our cancer journey is never over but I feel stronger knowing I am not alone.
