Original Poem from Julie Kearney

THE DAY MAMMY GOT CANCER

The day that mammy got cancer.

Behind the mask I was told.

A secret I held onto for days until I could find the right words.

The day Mammy got cancer.

I put on my brave face like my mam did before me and her mum did before her.

As I added to the long line of strong women in my family.

The day Mammy got cancer my fears became a temporary reality.

From the support of family and friends

To the lifts to appointments,  gifts, food and childcare.

The doctors and nurses care ,plans and medication.

To all I am so grateful.

The day Mammy got cancer

A day I will never forget

It has weakened me but strengthens me.

It will not always define me but has sculpted me.

I have survived but the fears lie deep.
