The Marie Keating Foundation warmly welcomes Budget 2025, which includes a significant commitment of €33 million to enhance cancer services, including funding for the National Cancer Strategy. This investment will lead to a full-year cost of €46.2 million in 2026.

This investment is a crucial step toward improving outcomes for individuals affected by cancer and their families as reports this week indicate that as many as 120 cancer cases may go untreated each day due to staffing deficits. The sooner these funds are allocated, the better the challenges patients face along the cancer care pathway can be addressed.

“This funding is a vital step forward, but we must keep pushing for consistent and adequate ringfenced funding to ensure the National Cancer Strategy’s successful and comprehensive implementation,” said Liz Yeates, CEO of the Marie Keating Foundation. “Our commitment to supporting those affected by cancer remains unwavering, and we will continue to call for the necessary investments that will lead to meaningful change.”

The Foundation is also encouraged to see an additional €14 million allocated for new oncology medicines, which will allow for expanded treatment options and improved access for patients.

According to the Department of Health, the Cancer Services package includes:

  • €15.7m for cancer treatment services
  • €5.5m for Alliance of Community Cancer Support Centres
  • €1.3m for Acute Oncology Nursing Service
  • €2m for standardised care for post-mastectomy products
  • €3.8m for expansion of BowelScreen to ages 58-70
  • €14m for oncology drugs
  • €0.4m for specialised radiology posts
  • €0.7m for advanced practitioner posts for cancer care
  • €2.9m for additional posts for BreastCheck

“It’s encouraging to see funds being allocated to those impacted by cancer. This investment demonstrates a commitment to not only treating the disease but also improving the overall quality of life for patients and their families,” continued Ms Yeates.
