“Men need to make a conscious effort to check on their health and not pretend they’re above vulnerability”

Marie Keating Foundation wants to “Get Men Talking” at free health and cancer awareness event

Thursday, 23 October 2014- “Men need to make a conscious effort to check on their health and not pretend they’re above vulnerability,” said rugby legend and prostate cancer survivor Tony Ward at the launch of the Marie Keating Foundations Get Men Talking Men’s Health Month. He continued, “I want to get the message out that it is imperative men have themselves checked and I hope that by doing so, I can help to save lives. Cancer is not an easy opponent to beat but its only be being aware of our health and the signs of symptoms of common men’s cancer like prostate cancer and testicular cancer that we stand the best chance of winning. We are quick to study the form of our opposition for that upcoming match but when it comes to going to the GP about a niggling problem, we can be hopeless. That has to change.” Ward will be speaking at the free Get Men Talking health information and cancer awareness event in the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday, 4 November at 6.30pm. To reserve a free place, email [email protected].

Also speaking at the free men’s health event will be ‘Marathon Man’ Gerry Duffy. Duffy will be giving a presentation on motivation, something he is familiar with having completed many endurance challenges including running 32 marathons in 32 days as well as a DECA-Iron Distance Triathlon, a 10 day endurance challenge which required Duffy to swim 24 miles, cycle 1,160 miles and run 262 miles.

Speaking alongside Tony Ward as part of a panel discussion will be Prof Niall Moyna who is a Professor in the School of Health and Human Performance and a member of the Centre for Preventive Medicine in DCU. He will be joined by Prof John McCaffrey, Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Mater Private Hosptial.

The Get Men Talking event will be MCed by cancer survivor and Newstalk Breakfast host Chris Donoghue.

Everyone who attends will receive a complementary Clarins gift with samples of two Clarinsmen skincare essentials.

The Get Men Talking event is proudly supported by Astellas Oncology.
