Education

Presentation by Ronan Keating of award for Cancer category at the Young Scientists Exhibition, which started work on the development of the CAP 2006.

The Foundation, in recognising the importance of education of young people in reducing the prevalence of cancer made the strategic decision to invest resources in the development of a schools programme targeted at senior level students in addressing the facts, risks, and the need for early interventions. The Cancer Awareness Programme (CAP) intends to contribute to the overall aims of the Foundation in addressing the need for education and raise awareness among the population of ages sixteen to eighteen years.

The CAP consists of resources and learning activities that enable students to learn about cancer in a supportive, motivating and ‘fun’ learning environment. Specifically the programme is

  • Broken down into five topics, breast, skin, lung, cervical and testicular cancer.
  • Each topic takes a class period or two/three periods required.
  • Teaching methods include, role-play, poetry, drama etc.
  • Resources used include a worksheets, fact sheets poems etc and all learning is underpinned by information and communications technology, such as video and webquest (website inquiry tool)

It is anticipated that the programme will be rolled-out to all secondary schools from September 2008 and if you would like more information on the programme itself or how it may be adapted for your own use please contact info@mariekeating.ie
