Comfort Fund Christmas Appeal

Give what you can and help us support patients along every step of their cancer journey

Can you help us give comfort to families affected by cancer this Christmas?

There are all kinds of financial costs associated with cancer that many people don’t realise – from travel expenses and hospital parking to childcare and household bills. As these expenses pile up, they can have a serious impact on people’s ability to cope with one of the toughest battles they’ve ever had to fight. That’s why we created the Marie Keating Foundation Comfort Fund.

Going through cancer treatment can be a frightening and isolating experience. The Marie Keating Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that nobody feels like they are going through it alone. From the first moment of diagnosis, we are with you Every Step, and nowhere is this commitment more evident than in our Comfort Fund.

When you’re being treated for cancer, it is vital to be able to give as much attention as possible to your journey to recovery – your appointments, your medications, even your diet. The Comfort Fund gives people relief from distracting worry, with financial grants large and small.

In 2018, we were able to give out 564 grants to support families all around Ireland. But the number of grant applications we recieve increases each year , strecthing our resources to their limit.

We urgently need your support so that we can help families who  desperately need our help.

Unfortunately patients facing cancer don’t have the luxury of time to wait. They need our support now. If you would like to give an extra gift this Christmas, this might be exactly the one you were looking for. Donations can be made very easily and securely online.

People we have helped

Just a teenager, Luke has been diagnosed with cancer. Thanks to a Comfort Fund grant, his family doesn’t have to struggle to cover basic bills.

Six-year-old Patricia had a brain tumour, and was accepted onto a trial of an experimental new treatment in Belgium. A grant from the Comfort Fund made it possible for her family to go with her.

Anita, a widow in her 60s, was living a simple but solitary life when she was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Her social worker used a Comfort Fund grant to buy her some presents to bring her a little joy on what would be her last Christmas.

How you can help this Christmas

Our Every Step Campaign

More people than ever before are facing financial hardship due to a cancer diagnosis, and that’s why we’ve launched our Every Step campaign. Over the next three years we have set ourselves the ambitious goal of ensuring we develop our vital cancer information and support services in Ireland so that we can help as many people affected by cancer at every step of their cancer journey.

Reaching this target is not going to be easy but it is essential that we get there. So many more people are asking for help from the Comfort Fund, and we want to help those in real need - as I’m sure you do too. Therefore, this Christmas, I’m asking you to spare a thought for those who are struggling with financial stress while on an already difficult cancer journey.

If you can give a kind gift of €40, you could help lift the burden of money worries from someone who can’t afford to get to the hospital – we’ve even heard stories of people missing radiotherapy appointments simply because they can’t afford to get there. We can’t allow this to keep happening.

A larger gift of €85 could help someone facing unmanageable fuel bills to help them keep the heating on for longer as they go through their treatment. With a very generous gift of €120 towards our Comfort Fund, you could help support so many more people who are unable to work due to cancer. Sadly, the bills don’t stop coming just because you’re having medical problems, so this help is so important.

The Marie Keating Foundation receives almost no government funding to help us do our work. Our services depend on kind people like you for every Euro spent. So please, this Christmas, send a donation of any size so that people fi ghting cancer don’t have to also battle money troubles. Help us be with them – every step – so that they can focus on what’s most important.

Question to might have before donating

Do you use donations wisely?

We know that it is important to you that the funds are spent wisely. At the Foundation, we are scrupulous with every euro you entrust to us to spend on our cancer mission. We ensure that we do our very best to keep any costs and overheads to an absolute minimum.

Why is the Comfort Fund needed?

  • The average extra spend per month for a cancer patient is €862 due to additional costs for medical fees, travel costs, childcare and household bills
  • In 2018, we have so far awarded Comfort Fund grants to 564 families from 22 different counties
  • Due to closure of similar funds for cancer patients, the number of applications we recieve annually have skyrocketed

Through the Comfort Fund, the Marie Keating Foundation provides financial assistance to people who are currently receiving treatment for any kind of cancer and who find themselves in financial difficulty as a result.

Recent research shows cancer patients and their families face a financial crisis while they are going through their treatment. A diagnosis of cancer can lead to increased medical costs such as consultant fees and expensive medications, additional expenses arising from increased travel to medical appointments that may be some distance from home; higher utility bills due to extra time at home while recovering from treatment. The financial burden can worsen significantly in cases where the cancer patient is the income earner in the family and has to take time off work.

The average extra spend per month for a cancer patient is €862. Those who cannot work, work fewer hours or lose income as a result of having cancer face an income drop averaging €1,400 a month, or €16,750 per year.

Many people can find themselves overwhelmed by these costs and this adds to the stress associated with their cancer diagnosis. The Marie Keating Foundation works very hard to lessen that burden.

Each year, the Marie Keating Foundation allocates a specific budget for people who are undergoing treatment for cancer but who are financially struggling. This fund has been in existence since 2004 and accepts applications on behalf of men, women and children from all around the country.

Behind every Comfort Fund application is a story of need and worry.  In 2018, the Foundation gave out 564 grants but applications have increased so much, if we do not raise further funds, we will have to turn down requests from families who desperately need our help.

Patients facing cancer can’t wait. They need our support now. Please make a donation and help us give comfort to cancer patients as they face the toughest fight of their lives.

How does the Marie Keating Foundation make a difference?

The Marie Keating Foundation is small, but makes a big difference in communities around Ireland.  Our annual income is relatively small (€1.3 million) but we make sure that every penny goes a long way. In 2018, our nurses gave out health information and advice to over 29,000 people; our Comfort Fund will help 564 families in their darkest hour; our Cancer Awareness Programme reached over 400 location nationwide. Our Cancer Awareness Campaigns engaged hundreds of thousands of people on skin cancer, men’s health and breast cancer to name but some.

Why can I trust the Marie Keating Foundation?

At the Marie Keating Foundation, we value your trust and support. We are entirely committed to the highest standards of corporate governance. We are a fully registered charity and were one of the first charities in Ireland to meet the ‘triple lock’ standard, the recommended best practice by Charities Institute Ireland for transparent reporting, good fundraising and governance.

We have an exceptionally committed, totally independent and completely voluntary Board of Directors. Our annual accounts are independently audited by Mazars in accordance with the SORP best practice accounting standard and are available as part of our annual report.

As we do not receive government funding, the Marie Keating Foundation could not survive without the generous support of the public and our corporate partners and so your trust in us is crucial.

Why was the Marie Keating Foundation established?

The Keating family lost their mother, Marie, to cancer in 1998. Soon after her death, they learnt that she had one of the most curable forms of breast cancer and would likely still be alive today if only she had gone to the doctor sooner. They established the Marie Keating Foundation to provide free cancer information and services, especially for people in disadvantaged communities where people are more likely to get cancer and die from cancer.
